ABOUT ME & MY WORK
My name is Marijke Koster, and I am an illustrator and visual artist. I graduated from Academy Minerva in Groningen in 2010, and since then my work has been in constant evolution — not by following trends, but by observing, experimenting, and refining.
In my paintings and illustrations, I aim not just to show what I see, but to convey what it feels like. Capturing the soul of a subject is central: the quiet of a landscape, the unique character of an animal, the moment when light brings everything together. My work is always a translation of reality through my eyes.
Painting & Inspiration
My greatest influences are Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet — not for their style, but for their attention to light, movement, and emotion. Light is essential in my work; it shapes mood, depth, and storytelling.
I draw much of my inspiration from nature: animals, landscapes, and the rhythm of the seasons. The natural world offers endless fascination, with both calm and intensity existing side by side.
Illustration & Process
I primarily work with gouache and colored pencils, and every piece is handmade — no AI, no shortcuts. Even when designing logos or visual identities, my process begins on paper, guided by shape, line, and feeling.
In Progress
My work continues to evolve, but what remains constant is my attention to detail, my love for the handmade, and my desire to create images that linger quietly in the viewer’s mind.
Personal Work & Commissions
Most of my time is devoted to personal projects, where I explore, slow down, and develop my visual language. I also accept commissions, from illustrations and paintings to logos or visual designs, always approached with the same care for craft and character.
